I just saw a print ad for Calvin Klein´s new fragrance Secret Obsession. The new ad campaign features Eva Mendes, my girl crush. In my opinion the picture looks good but it´s not sensational. It looks like any parfume ad, it doesn´t really stand out. I think they should have used Evas sensuality more. It was my favourite parfume in the ´90s and I will definitely try it when it comes to stores. Interesting to see if the parfume is as bland as the ad!

On 2nd of June the Council of Fashion Designers of America held their annual awards ceremony at the NY Public Library.

I love Victoria Beckham´s look at the fashion awards. Very fierce! She is wearing Marc Jacobs, of course. I like her hairstyle and the dress stunning.

Kim Cattrall looks amazing in Monique Lhuiller Fall 2008! She is very beautiful compared to the model and that says a lot. Very often clothes look better on models than on celebrities.

Several newspapers have reported that Kate Moss has been dropped as the face of Agent Provocateur. Now the spokeswomen for AP explains on Vogue.co.uk that the rumours are inaccurate. She also mentions that Kate has been signed for a one year contract as the face of the bridal collection, White Wedding. Agent Provocateur is one month into the campaign and it has proved the most successful campaign the company has ever done.

But there are developments afoot for the label's next mainline campaign, which is due to launch in September. The company recently shot a series of images that will feature a whole host of British and international beauties. Exciting!

CHARLOTTE´S CLOTHING LINE?

Vogue is reporting that SATC´s Kristin Davis is launching her own clothing range for American retailer Belk. The line will launch at the end of August and at the beginning it includes sportswear, activewear, sleepwear, accessories and footwear. This is Belk´s first celebrity line and the prices will range from $30 to $240.

I am very sceptical about celebrity clothing lines. Most of them are just crap. I think that very few of them are OK, none of them is great. I think that people who buy these clothes are buying a piece of the celebrity. I understand that celebrities love fashion and clothes but I don´t understand what makes them think that they can do a better job of designing clothes that the professional designers who have studied this for years? Anyway, I like Kristin´s style, she dresses very well for her body type. She knows her body well, what to hide and what to show. Good luck! (You need it with sceptics like me.)

BLOOM´S SECOND COMING

In 2002 Australian make-up brand Bloom disappeared without a trace. Now it is back and as pretty as ever! It is sold at Superdrug. The selection is wide: lipsticks, lip glosses, lip tints, eye paints, cheek tints, different foundations, huge selection of nail polishes, bath and body products and even skincare. The prices are pretty too, for example about £8,00 for a lip gloss and eye paints £10,00.

Personally I have never tried Bloom´s products but they look so girly and pretty that they cannot be bad. I will definitely try them soon!

OLSENS DESIGN JEWELLERY

Not content with launching not one but two fashion lines, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are reportedly already fully immersed in their next design challenge: jewellery. The creative twosome have hooked up with Council of Fashion Designers of America award-winning jewellery designer Robert Lee Morris - of whom they are both fans - to create a collection of accessories to sit within their high-end Elizabeth and James offering.

The twins are said to have been heavily involved with the project, visiting Morris' Manhattan headquarters to trawl through his archives for inspiration. According to WWD, the resulting line of dagger necklaces, chunky rings and earrings - which is creatively entitled Robert Lee Morris for Elizabeth and James - will launch within months.

The line will be available only in the UK starting July 2nd and it will be sold in John Lewis, Debenhams and Fenwicks. The collection has been kept a secret but a few pictures have surfaced on the Internet. The picture at right is taken at Australian Fashion Week and Mischa is carrying her own bag.

Interesting news to all the parfume lovers! Vera Wang, Marc Jacobs, Prada and Dolce & Gabbana were the big-name winners at this year's prestigious FiFi fragrance awards. Daisy by Marc Jacobs, his new scent with Coty Prestige, won Fragrance of the Year in the women's luxury category, while Dolce & Gabanna Light Blue Pour Homme - by P&G Prestige Products, Inc - won the respective men's category. Wang turned out in person to the 36th annual awards ceremony in New York on Tuesday to collect her Hall of Fame award from New York Ranger Sean Avery.

Also in attendance was a reflective Zac Posen, who will release his first women's fragrance in December and is already thinking about its men's counterpart. "I remember an Elsa Peretti bottle - I think she designed it for Halston, it was a really cool shape," he told Fashion Wire Daily, recalling his earliest scent memories. "Then I went through a stage of collecting great, really kitsch perfume bottles of Avon. But the first fragrance I purchased was probably Obsession. That's a young, undiscovered gay boy's idea of sexuality or sensuality."

I totally agree. I love Daisy by Marc Jacobs! It´s youthful, light and very easy to wear scent. It is not just the parfume that smells wonderful, even the bottle looks so cute and girly.

Calvin Klein has never been a brand to shy away from controversy, and it's at it again: this time, with some steamy adverts featuring Eva Mendes to promote its new fragrance, Secret Obsession. The television ads have been banned in their current format by censors in the US, but the label has vowed to fight the ruling.

"The Obsession brand resonates in a very provocative place," explains Catherine Walsh, senior vice president of American fragrances for Coty Prestige, the Calvin Klein Fragrances licensee. "And we wanted to do a provocative ad. But we're not trying to be raunchy. There's a lot of skin, but it's done tastefully. " So what's got the censors hot under the collar?

"It really taps into the secrecy of a private moment - where it's clear that Eva is having illicit thoughts," Lori Singer, vice president of global marketing for the brand at Coty Prestige, tells WWD. "It's somewhat up to interpretation - because of how it's shot, and what you see and hear, and what you can't see and hear. You hear her voice, talking about having a sexy secret."

Supermodel Agyness Dayn has tried her hand at singing and has started her own ban. Now she has decided to go into acting also. Currently she is shooting a short film by band mate Alanna Masterson in Long Island. "It's the first time I've actually had to speak! I kind of feel like fish out of water, and I'm finding a big pond to swim in. I just like opening up different channels and keeping myself interested," says Deyn, who plays an imaginary friend in the film - which, with a working title The Right Side of My Exultant Brain, also stars Dustin Hoffman's son Jake.

"It's nice working on this particular thing because it's friends, and it's a very chilled environment to learn," she adds on NYMAG.COM. "I'm just throwing myself in. Kate Moss´ new collection for Topshop is boho inspired. The Bohemian styled collection ranges in price from £10 for a vest to £150 for a premium dress. You can buy the collection both at the store and online.

I think I quite like it, although I suspect that it looks better on pictures than in reality. I love the red pansy dress, it costs £60,00 but unfortunately it´s sold out at the moment. It also comes in purple and there are only sizes UK 6 and UK 8 left. The indian printed dress in the middle costs £45,00 but it is sold out as well. This Indian print dress comes as a cami also and it costs £35,00. Sizes UK 12, 14, 16 are left.

I also like this striped ´50 dress, £45,00. By the way, I found a picture where Kate is wearing this dress. Right now sizes UK 12, 14 and 16 are left.

Gwyneth Paltrow has been confirmed as the face of Italian accessories company Tod´s autumn/winter 2008-9 collection. The campaign was shot by photographer Mario Testino in Capri. She replaces fellow leading lady Sienna Miller, who starred in last year's campaigns. Creative director Derek Lam explains why Gwyneth was chosen: "Gwyneth effortlessly embodies the spirit of the all American woman with timeless elegance and modern flair - the perfect representation of the Tod's woman. VERSACE WINS SUPERSTAR AWARD

Donatella Versace is officially to be recognised as a fashion megastar. The Italian design dynamo will be awarded the prestigious Superstar Award by Fashion Group International at this year's annual Night of Stars gala - which celebrates its 25th year in 2008 - at Cipriani Wall Street on October 23. Poignantly for Versace, her brother Gianni won the award in 1995, two years before his death.

Jean Paul Gaultier took home the trophy last year, following in the footsteps of a veritable Who's Who of the international fashion scene; Tom Ford, Nino Cerruti, Donna Karan, Giorgio Armani and Valentino are also among the award's previous recipients.

They look so rock´n´roll! Right now Barneys has these shoes and they cost $865,00. Only US size 8 is left, sorry.

TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE?

Have you ever wanted a fabulous blowdry that lasts for months? I found this article from Daily Mail. I was impressed. Afterwards I found little news about it on vogue.co.uk, so it seems that it is some kind of launch of a new service. Now I am skeptical and wonder if it is really that good like the girl describes in this article?

Why do my hair and I hate Britain's seasons so? Let me count the ways. When it rains, my hair frizzes into candyfloss. When it's hot and I step into the cool air conditioning, my hair bristles in shock. With every gust of wind, the haystack tangle on the back of my head grows bigger and stronger, like some hairy animal that threatens to suffocate me.

My hair is thick, coarse and disobedient. I function day-to-day only with a strict regime of blow-drying and straightening. Such styling is tedious in the extreme, yet I am still a slave to it. My hairdryer and ghd straighteners may make me more presentable, but they are so time-consuming I lose out on sleep and have a nasty case of Frizzer's Elbow from all those hours spent holding the instruments of torture over my fluffy head.

So when I hear of a new treatment that promises the effect of a "permanent blow-dry" that lasts three months, I unplug my hairdryer, throw down my tongs and race to Daniel Hersheson's salon in London's Mayfair. "Are you absolutely sure you haven't used any bleach?" asks Amir, the stylist, as he holds up a woolly hank of my hair between a disapproving thumb and forefinger.

Bleach?! My hair is almost as dark as Morticia Addams's, thanks to an unfortunately intense dying disaster a few weeks back. Despite a scalp-full of jet-black evidence proving I am not a naughty user of peroxide, Amir looks unconvinced. "But how else could your hair be so dry, so damaged?" he asks, shuddering theatrically.

He has 35 years' experience with hair, and I get the feeling my barnet is upsetting him. "We must get rid of your wiry hair. No more frizz!" Fine, I think. Fine. Give me all the abuse you like, just fix my frizz. And so he does. "This product works best on coloured and damaged hair,' he raves, eager to begin. "In fact, the worse condition your hair is in, the better the treatment performs."

I smile along with him and keep my fingers tightly crossed. First, his assistant shampoos and conditions my hair. Judging by her platinum crop, she is no stranger to bleach, yet her hair is soft and silky and sits just so. Very promising. Next, Amir sits me down in front of the mirror and paints on the nourishing treatment, section by section. It's a protein-rich superfood for hair, apparently, soothing each strand with a blend of cocoa, plant vitamins, red clay and other natural ingredients.

It smells so much like caramel that I want to dive in tongue first. If it didn't cost upwards of £200, I'd be licking the brush. The treatment stays on for about ten minutes, and instead of washing it out, Amir starts rough-drying it. The product dries to a silky, ungreasy finish, though I do worry it will look lank later on. But as Amir painstakingly blow-dries my hair around a barrel brush, I can see the bouncy yet smooth style taking shape.

I am pleased to note it takes him 45 minutes - and he's a professional. No wonder my at-home hairdrying sessions were so tough on my arms. The prospect of not having to wrestle with my wire-wool hair for three months is delicious. The finish Amir gives my hair is so good that when he picks up the straighteners I falter. Would that not spoil it? He explains that the treatment is not complete unless it is sealed into each hair shaft with the straighteners.

But he reassures me that unlike other hair relaxants, this stuff isn't going to make my hair brittle and poker-straight. In fact, the idea is that natural waves and curls remain; but they're smoother and more defined. I breathe out and let him have his way with the straighteners. As I glide out of the salon, half blinded by the shine coming off my head, I take note of Amir's strict instructions for the next three days, until I am allowed to shampoo my hair myself.

Rain and hairbands are the enemy: water will make my hair frizz up permanently (horrors!), and even one ping of a tight hairband will cause an irreparable kink. "Really," he says tenderly, "you do have beautiful hair now. It will be easy for you to take good care of it." I shake the miracle-worker's hand. I may have even promised him my first-born. For the next three days, I stay in and watch my hair get more and more greasy.

When I am finally allowed to shampoo it, I leave it to dry naturally - something I'd never have done before, even if an axe-murderer had been chasing me from my house. But sure enough, my hair dries as soft as a kitten's and twice as glossy. To the untrained eye (i.e., my boyfriend's), my hairstyle looks just the same. Only better. It takes prompting, but he does notice that my hair looks luscious and shiny like never before.

My new locks aren't Halloweenfrightwig straight, but glossy and smooth. For once, if I want tousled locks, I'll have to get busy with my curling tongs. The best thing is, it holds the style yet has lots of natural movement. The massive tangle that has lurked at the top of my neck since the dawn of time is gone. My fingers glide through it over and over again, unable to believe they haven't been eaten by the Venus flytrap-like jaws of my old tangles.

The only other restriction about the permanent blow-dry is that you can't colour or bleach your hair for three days after having the treatment, but after that you're free to do as you please. So is the permanent blow-dry worth the money? Gisele Bundchen, the only supermodel who out-earns Kate Moss, swears by it. But for ordinary women without million-dollar salaries, is it just an indulgent treat for the party season ahead? Absolutely not. As Amy Winehouse will no doubt testify, when your hair is a frizzy mess, your whole life can go haywire.

Now that I'm glossed to the max, my friends comment on how much more relaxed and happy I seem. My hair is not just manageable, but a delight. I stop fussing over it, even when I have to dash straight from work to a black-tie party in 20 minutes flat. "But," warns my friend Anna, "if you keep swishing your hair about smugly like that, I can't promise I'll be able to stop myself hacking it off."

CHANEL CRUISE COLLECTION

Karl Lagerfeld was showing its latest cruise collection for Chanel in Miami. He said of its collection that "It's all about proportions, cuts, volumes. There is not one line that is taken all through the collection. For cruise, you don't do that. There are many looks and an attitude."

I found some pictures at Getty and Style. From what I can see there were lots of feathers on display and I don´t like it. I am not sure about the collection. I think it is very wearable and very cruise-like, lots of beautiful pieces, I just can´t really find anything that makes me go "I WANT IT!" Some of the clothes I loved, some I like and some were just blah. Now when I went through the looks again, I got a kind of 1920s and 1930s feel. Sex and the City siren Samantha and Kim Cattrall, the actress who plays her, aren’t so different – both women have an obsession with shoes. “I used to display my shoes all over my house like art,” admits 51-year-old Kim. But now she’s installed a 44sq-ft closet in her New York home, Kim has the perfect showcase for her designer shoe and bag collection.

And for extra diva points, all the shoes are arranged either by their heel height or open-toe style. Kim loves the sheer indulgence of her ultra-luxe girl’s room. “I’ve never had a space like this,” she says. “It’s like my own sanctuary of sunlight.” Light is the theme that has inspired the interior design of the rest of her home, too. She renovated her house to eradicate any unflattering lighting.

“A friend came round and said: ‘Kim, neon is not our friend’, so that was it – they had to go!” laughs the actress, who admits to having Botox. Here is a short interview with Sarah Jessica Parker from a magazine Fabulous that comes with Sunday newspaper News of the World. She talks about shoes, SATC movie and her family.

The mere thought of it is enough to send pulses racing and a surge of blood to our cheeks. No, we’re not talking about a night of passion with a hot man, but something much more meaningful and, dare we say it, a little longer-lasting – slipping into a pair of very sexy, very expensive shoes. Specifically Manolo Blahniks – Sarah Jessica Parker’s own Achilles heels. So, for those of us without a wardrobe bursting with designer wear (and I suspect that might be the majority), we have to ask – are Manolos really better than sex?

“If you asked Carrie it would depend on where she was in her romantic cycle,” giggles Sarah. “But I would say that she could probably count on a Manolo more than a man. So is it better than sex? Yes!” Sarah’s love affair with designer foot candy began all those years ago in 1998 (1999 in the UK) when Sex and the City started – the role that made her so famous she transcended the need for a full name, and became just three initials instead. The reason for our fabulously girlie get-together is, of course, the eagerly awaited movie out on May 28. This is the film event of the year, although it almost never happened.

While they may have been the best of pals on screen, the rumoured off-screen warfare between Sarah and her co-star Kim Cattrall was reportedly so fierce it threatened to scupper plans for a big-screen reunion. So how was it, I wonder, to be back in those heels again?

“It wasn’t as taxing as I thought it was going to be,” she smiles. “Back in the day, I could run a marathon in heels and wake up the next day and run another one. “I thought to myself: ‘I’m getting older’, but my feet managed to respond to the challenge.” She may be feeling her age but, at 43, SJP looks amazingly youthful. Does getting older worry her? “You can’t battle it,” she says. “You see the attempts of people trying to stop it, but I don’t want to do that.”

Sarah may brush off stories of disagreements with her co-stars, but she is keen to talk about Carrie’s transition from a young woman in her early 30s when the TV series began, to the more mature 40-something in the movie. “She’s a very different person to the one she was,” says Sarah. “Carrie is living a life that she might have imagined, but didn’t think she was going to have. “When something happens that is extraordinary and upsetting, she recognises that she is not the same person she was.

"When you’re older, you respond differently to loss. "And your friends are a necessity, but they can’t fix things the way they used to. "This story really tells the truth about what it means to be a grown-up.” She remains tight-lipped over what “loss” means – it’s rumoured that a main character dies in the movie. Whatever happens, you get the feeling that this is all very final.

After playing her for so long, what will she miss about Carrie? “I loved her curiosity and I loved her interest in other people,” she says. “I was very envious of the time she gave to others. Who has that kind of time for their friends?”

With husband, Matthew Broderick, 46, five-year-old son James, an acting career, a perfume empire and a new sports clothing line to juggle, it’s difficult to imagine that Sarah has much time to catch up with her girlfriends. And she’d certainly dispute that she leads a glamorous, carefree life like Carrie. Indeed, when it comes to raising kids, she’s experienced the same difficulties as other busy mums. Sarah recently revealed that her 11-year marriage has been under strain following rows about parenting. She said: “We have had some rather treacherous train rides.

"We are different parents and we have different ways of parenting. "I’m happy to be with Matthew regardless, but I’m sure there are times he wishes he wasn’t with me.” Somehow we doubt it, Sarah, but if you ever run into real problems, there’s always Big!

On Monday one of the most important fashion events of the year will take place : Costume Institute Gala at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. The theme of the event is Superhero. Can´t wait!

According to vogue Giorgio Armani is honorary chair of the event, with George Clooney, Julia Roberts, and Anna Wintour co-chairing. And according to The Daily, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen will be guests of Diane von Furstenberg, who has created dresses for the twins especially for the event; Gisele Bündchen and her sports star beau Tom Brady will be there with Donatella Versace; Scarlett Johansson and Iman and David Bowie will be hitting the red carpet in Dolce and Gabbana; and Sofia Coppola, Karen Elson and Helena Christensen are all on Team Marc Jacobs.

Last year´s event was Paul Poiret-inspired and the guests wore nice drop-waisted cocktail dresses and elaborate beadwork. It will be very exciting to see how the A-list plan to interpret the superhero theme. The gossip is that AnnaWintour has requested her entire staff wear dresses in shades of white and silver.

TEMPERLEY TO SHOW IN LONDON

British designer Alice Temperley will show her spring/summer 2009 collection in London Fashion Week for the first time in six seasons. Temperley London took its signature brand of ethereal femininity to New York for showtime in 2005 and the time is right for a change of scene. It's an exciting time for the designer, who is expecting her first baby, with her husband Lars von Bennigsen, at the end of September. "Being a quintessentially English brand and proud of our heritage, we are delighted to take this opportunity to return home to show our spring/summer 2009 collection and to be a part of the great new energy that London beholds," she says.

My opinion on the subject...

What can I say? Welcome back! It´s really good news. For a few years I have felt that many big British designers have moved their shows to New York, so it feels really good that they are coming back. I think that it gives London Fashion Week more credibility. Take a look at some of my favourite looks from Alice Temperley´s S/S´08 collection. But I must say that this was not my favourite collection, too experimental, although it included some typical Temperley dresses like the black and white ones.

Rejoice all Hugo Boss fans in New York! This summer Hugo Boss opens a new store in New York's Meatpacking District. The shop is 3,750 square foot and the interior is designed by Italian architect Matteo Thun. From what I have read, the interior sounds interesting - a diamond-shaped structure in bleached oak and features shelves and hanging racks that enhace this structure.

Other details are custom-made elements in bronzed metal, leather and velvet are used to create the company’s atmosphere. The selection on offer will be a combination from the four different Boss lines (Boss Black, Orange, Selection and Green), the Hugo brand and accessories. This coming July, Hugo Boss is planning to launch another Boss Store in SoHo.

If rock purists were unsettled last month by the opening of a designer boutique on the site of what once was CBGB, the hard-core Bowery nightclub, imagine how they will feel reading the next sentence: The old Tower Records space a few blocks away on Broadway, for two decades the spot for adolescent reveries of dance, pop and punk, has been leased by Steve & Barry’s, a clothing chain where everything costs less than $10.

Steve & Barry’s, for the uninitiated, is to fashion what Tower once was to music. Steve & Barry’s is manna, a store that sells stylish celebrity-branded clothes at prices that are absurdly inexpensive, lower than those at Old Navy, H & M or Forever 21, undercutting even Wal-Mart by as much as half.

At its 264 barnlike stores in malls across the country, including the perpetually mobbed one at the Manhattan Mall in Midtown, Steve & Barry’s offers an assortment of flowery sundresses designed by Sarah Jessica Parker ($8.98), heart-printed hoodies by the Nickelodeon alumna Amanda Bynes ($8.98) and basketball shoes by the New York Knicks point guard Stephon Marbury ($8.98). Lines at the registers are often 20 deep.

The question on everyone’s lips: How do they make a decent dress or a jacket, with sleeves, or a pair of functioning shoes for $8.98? The answer is complicated, but for those who can remember what it was like to wile away an evening browsing the exhilaratingly chaotic downtown Tower store, its coming transformation into a temple of cheap denim short-shorts, cargo pants and walls of novelty T-shirts makes some sort of sense in the arc of cultural evolution.

Fashion, as it has become more accessible to a generation that is obsessed with the mass emulation of celebrity style, has surpassed music (and the increasingly archaic concept of the record store) as the retail touchstone of youth. And cheap fashion has become infinitely more respectable, even cool, given the current economic climate.

“It seems like there is some justice in that, doesn’t it?” said Ms. Parker, who last week attended a movie premiere wearing a bitty blue sundress with a print of hothouse foliage, $8.98, from Bitten, her year-old Steve & Barry’s collection. “For a lot of people — young women, middle-age women, regular women — there is this idea about wanting fashion in an affordable way. They are living in a less rarefied world.

”The significance of planning a store on Broadway — by the time it opens this fall, it will be around the 300th Steve & Barry’s in the country and the largest in New York — is not lost on Steve Shore and Barry Prevor, childhood friends from Long Island who founded the company in 1985. During an interview last month in their headquarters in Port Washington, N.Y., Mr. Shore, from Syosset, and Mr. Prevor, from Merrick, both 44, said the location was a logical choice, given its proximity to New York University and their target demographic. It is also intended to send a message to the fashion industry, which has largely underestimated the chain despite sales last year, according to the business-research firm Hoover’s Inc., of $1.1 billion.

“There’s been a revolution, a full-blown revolution,” Mr. Shore said, sounding, at times, just a bit like Crazy Eddie. “We just haven’t told anyone yet. If the Gap or Abercrombie & Fitch or J. Crew said that everything in the store is going to be $8.98 or less, it would be front-page news. But while no one was noticing, we opened stores across the country that have identical clothes for much lower prices.”

The question, again, is how. They opened the first Steve & Barry’s store at the University of Pennsylvania in 1985 with the idea of selling licensed collegiate designs at much lower prices than the campus bookstores. In the 1990s, after expanding with locations near Big Ten campuses, they introduced a larger, mall-based format selling casual sportswear (mostly T-shirts bearing sophomoric logos, targeted toward young men — three inebriated frogs, for example, are “Toadily Wasted”).

In 2006, they began offering more fashionable designs in partnerships with Mr. Marbury, Ms. Parker and other celebrities, thereby changing the look and concept of the stores, but not the underlying business model that relied on an obsessive attention to costs.Mr. Shore and Mr. Prevor, dressed in chinos and rumpled shirts, frequently described the company as “the Google of fashion” and rattled off several ways they had devised to make a high-quality product at the low prices. The clothes appear to be well made — several of the Bitten dresses, made in India, were lined, and the strapless dress Ms. Parker wore is constructed with an internal elastic band to hold it up. And the basketball shoes appear sturdy, although they are made with fake leather (well, so are Stella McCartney’s).

Steve & Barry’s saves big, for example, by opening stores in underperforming malls, where the owners are more likely to negotiate rents and offer other incentives; by building its own bare-bones store displays; by maintaining only a small public relations office in Manhattan; and by manufacturing in countries like China, India, Madagascar and more than 20 others, including the United States.

Though the prices will raise concerns that the clothes are made in sweatshop factories that underpay or otherwise exploit workers, Mr. Shore and Mr. Prevor said absolutely not.Howard Schacter, the company’s chief partnership officer, said Steve & Barry’s monitors its subcontractors carefully and demands ethical business practices. The key to its low prices, he said, is a razor-slim profit margin.

Then, too, Steve & Barry’s doesn’t advertise, but rather relies on word of mouth.Steve & Barry’s also saves small — for example, by using discount hotels, like Motel 6 and Econo Lodge, for travel, assigning one printer to 50 employees and myriad other ways. On a tour of their offices, where designers’ cubicles are retrofitted into dreary, sometimes windowless nooks, Mr. Shore and Mr. Prevor pointed out aging furniture that Mr. Prevor found in his parents’ basement and a filing cabinet that bore the logo of a fruit-and-vegetable distributor. (There was a large stack of papers spilling onto the floor next to it.)

It is not a country club, but the offices are lively and full of 20-somethings, many of them recent college graduates — the director of stores was a music major at Harvard — attracted at being able to take on significant responsibilities fairly early in their careers, and also by the likelihood that Steve & Barry’s will eventually go public. TA Associates, a private-equity firm that backs Eastern Mountain Sports and Jenny Craig, bought a minority stake in 2006.

“To be great, you have to have these ridiculous, insane prices, and not sacrifice quality,” Mr. Shore said. “The question we constantly ask ourselves is how to hit the price point that even Wal-Mart is not hitting.”The most basic dresses at J. Crew start at $58. At American Apparel, they start at $26; at Old Navy, $19.50; and at Forever 21, some styles cost $15.80. The least expensive dress on the Wal-Mart Web site is $14.92.

Prices at Steve & Barry’s are actually dropping — the $8.98 threshold was introduced as a holiday promotion last year, but remains with no set expiration, Mr. Prevor said. (At the newest store in Waipahu, Hawaii, which opened last Friday, the highest price is $9.98, reflecting increased shipping costs.)Meanwhile, the company’s sales at locations open at least a year, a crucial indicator of retail health, have increased more than 20 percent each month since January, he said.

Outside the Manhattan Mall store this week, several customers said they appreciated the quality and style of the clothes, but over and over they said, “The prices are unbelievable.”“I have no idea how they do it,” said Katherynne Ramirez, 24, from the Bronx, who estimated that 35 percent of her closet came from Steve & Barry’s.

“The material seems pretty good for the price, so I bought a lot of summer tops. They looked nice.”None of this sufficiently explains how Steve & Barry’s managed to lure a celebrity like Ms. Parker, who, in a now decade-long performance as Carrie Bradshaw on “Sex and the City,” helped establish the credibility of binge fashion consumption as a national pastime and made Manolo Blahnik a household name. As a celebrity designer, she could have had her pick of deals, but as a businesswoman, she sensed the possibilities in mass and a change in the public perception toward low-price clothes.

“I had never heard of Steve & Barry’s, and I didn’t know anyone who had ever heard of them,” Ms. Parker said. “I was dubious. But I loved their manifesto and the idea of the marketization of fashion.” A year into their collaboration, Ms. Parker has been joined at Steve & Barry’s by Ms. Bynes, whose more teenage-oriented label is called Dear, and Venus Williams, whose performance collection is called Eleven.

For men, there are additional basketball styles named after Ben Wallace, golf clothes from Bubba Watson and a new surf-wear collection from Laird Hamilton. The success of Mr. Marbury’s Starbury shoes, the first celebrity style introduced in the store in 2006, then at $14.98, has been heralded as a backlash against $100-plus styles like the Nike Air Jordan. Steve & Barry’s, according to estimates, has sold more than 10 million pairs.

“What has changed,” Ms. Parker said, “is that now people have bragging rights about what they paid. I admired a woman’s pair of pants at a party recently and she said, ‘Fourteen dollars! H & M!’ It really is, among the people I know, part of what they do now. ”Mr. Shore and Mr. Prevor again likened the change to a revolution. “When you look at clothing now,” Mr. Prevor said, “price is not the arbiter of what is good. It’s the clothes themselves.”

Denim devotees rejoice: Alber Elbaz has revealed that Lanvin is working with cult label Acne on its first line of jeans. "I want to bring Lanvin into their know-how," the designer tells The Daily. "What if you don't want to wear a skinny jean? It's time to go back to a product that has a dream to it. I asked myself, 'What kind of jeans can I bring that will be a Lanvin jean and Acne spirit infused in one?'"

While no official contract between the two labels has been signed, Elbaz confirms the project is going full steam ahead, with 2009 in mind for launch. And it doesn't stop there. "It's being created out of a need, like how we don't do an entire bridal line but instead have a few pieces," he added. "It's the first of several niches I'd like to build."

CRUNCH TIME FOR GUCCI

Is the economic downturn finally starting to permeate the luxury market? PPR yesterday announced that sales of Gucci's handbags and watches - it's Double G brand - had dropped by 3.3 per cent in the first three months of this year. On a like-for-like basis Gucci's sales did rise, but the 2.4 per cent increase was lower than predicted - and in a different league from last year's growth of 10.6 per cent. "In the first quarter, our markets have been less favourable, particularly in mature markets," said PPR's finance director Jean Francois Palus, as the figures were revealed.

While the high street has been fighting the credit crunch for months, luxury brands have, until now, remained relatively untouched; PPR's fellow power players, LVMH and Richemont, both recently said their sales were healthy. PPR's sales overall rose by 4.1 per cent. The downturn in mature markets is indicative of bonus cuts and redundancies in the City, The Evening Standard comments.

Having cut his teeth designing interiors for Parisian boutique hotels, high-speed trains and even cinemas, Christian Lacroix is taking things up a notch with his next makeover project: a residential tower in a Dubai's Jumeirah suburb. The designer is partnering with Middle Eastern property developer Abyaar for the venture, which will see him create the façade, lobby and luxury interiors of the 38-unit beachside property.

"We approached Lacroix because he is known for his exceptional design skills and theatrical style, both on and off the catwalk," says Abyaar's vice-chairman and managing director, Marzooq Al Rashdan. "This is the start of a long-term partnership that places Abyaar on the luxury development map internationally." Lacroix, meanwhile, is all about the details. "We are working on something special that will tell a Middle Eastern story," he revealed to WGSN. "The interiors will be based on paradox - contemporary and baroque, blending East and West, old and new, inspired by history and folklore."

Ahead of London's mayoral election, Ken Livingstone has announced his backing for a "permanent venue" for London Fashion Week. "London is a world centre for fashion. Great designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and John Galliano use London as a place of inspiration, to experiment and launch new ideas," he explained in his Cultural Manifesto, delivered at yesterday's launch of Culture in 21st century London at the Institute of Contemporary Arts.

"I will ensure there is support for the new design talent that is the bedrock of the industry. I will help London Fashion Week establish a permanent venue in the capital. At the same time I will work to improve conditions in the industry, particularly for models, through ensuring that the recommendations of the Model Health Inquiry are implemented," he continued.

According to Drapers, the position is newly created and will see him play a significant role in implementing a new strategy that Jane Shepherdson is thought to be developing for the brand. Passmore, formerly a member of Shepherdson's successful TopShop team, joins Karyn Fenn, now brand director at Whistles, as part of the head office team. Other members include finance director Keith Wilks, digital marketing manager Kate Malkin and marketing director Jo Farelly, all formerly at TopShop.

Following the recent opening of the Harvey Nichols-based boutique, fans of the legendary shoemaker will now be able to take delight in a gorgeous three-room shop showcasing the latest spring/summer 2008 collection in all its glory.

"In such a pretty street, I want to have my prettiest shoes," says Louboutin of the new Mayfair address. In keeping with his original boutique on rue Jean-Jacques in Paris, shoes will perch among mirrored alcoves (which also disguise a hidden library room) while handbags will be displayed in brightly coloured tin frames and a Perspex part light structure – created by the designer himself, no less – will take pride of place. Cult jeweller Tatty Devine has got together with the de Young gallery in San Francisco to create an exclusive new collection celebrating British artists Gilbert & George. Among the typically cool and quirky range are a pair of gin bottle cufflinks, Gilbert & George glasses, and "Hope" and "Fear" brooches and necklaces. Before you get too excited, however, we have to point out that the pieces are only available to buy from the museum shop, to tie-in with the Gilbert & George exhibition it is running until May 18. So for Tatty fans who can't make it stateside, there's something else to look forward to: a collaboration with London-based artist Rob Ryan, whose paper cut designs will be on show at the Tatty Devine Brick Lane gallery from April 25.

Tatty Devine jewellery is very unique, you won´t find similar designs anywhere. They are really fun and kitchy but I think you can even wear them at work, for example Music Note Bracelet in Red. MY FAVOURITE LUSH PRODUCTS

I love Lush products! Everytime I go to their shop, I buy something. The products are not tested on animals and they mostly use natural ingredients, so it always feels goods to buy Lush goodies. Only problem I have is that I cannot stay in the shop for a long time because the smell is really strong in there! Anyway, this time I came back with some of my old favourite products.

Whipstick lip balm, costs £4,25 (69,00 SEK). It is smooth, really moisturizing and has a yummy chocolate taste. I also like that it is not goopy or greasy. It is supposed to give your lips a hint of colour but I didn´t notice it but I am not complaining. I use lots of lipglosses anyway.

I also love their bath bombs and bubbel bars. I bought Creamy Candy Bar bubbel bar £2,15 (49,00 SEK) and Butterball bath bomb £1,95 (39,00 SEK). The bubbel bar is so pretty and pink and it lasts quite a long time. You can use it for at least 3-4 baths. It creates lots of bubbles and the skin smells amazing afterwards. It is quite mosturizing also!

I absolutely love Butterball bath bomb because it really moisturizes my skin and makes it feel silky and soft but not greasy. It usually doesn´t happen with bath products. It has a nice vanilla scent that is not too strong.

Another favourite product from Lush is a Dream Cream, it costs £9,25 (159,00 SEK). I bought it first time about a year ago after reading great reviews about this product. I decided to try and now I have bought it many times. The texture is light but don´t be fooled, it is a very moisturizing cream! It soaks right into the skin and leaves it so soft! The smell is light and fresh, reminds me of lavender.

He will work closely with his sister, Caroline Burstein, who is Browns' creative director, in overseeing new projects and continuing to push the brand profile to even greater heights.

"At the same time I am sad to have to say goodbye to Niki Scordi and thank her for her brilliant work for Browns in the last three years." The day after Burberry announced an 18 per cent rise in revenue, LVMH is getting in on the act - declaring a 12 per cent increase in first quarter sales, to $5.99 billion.And it's the business's core fashion and leather goods brands - Louis Vuitton, Fendi, Marc Jacobs and Givenchy among them - that fuelled the surge, with the figures for that group rising 14 per cent to $2.16 billion.

The US, Europe and Asia were areas of "particularly significant" activity, the report noted, adding that boosting the market share and profitability of its top brands would be among its priorities going forward. On the beauty side, Dior's J'Adore Dior and Midnight Poison fragrances were singled out as top performers.
